You better recognize

Was watching a documentary the other day on the quake in Asia. At the end of the program was an appeal to help those who suffered in this disaster. After a very moving segment which featured those affected speaking about their experience and suffering, the channel published a hotline number for donations. What interested me the most was the announcement that anyone who donated US$ 125 and above would get their names mentioned in a special earthquake edition of a well known magazine and those who donated upwards of US$ 625 would have the honor of having their names mentioned on this channel.

It got me thinking… what is the point in helping others solely for the purpose of showing that you’re doing so. If the channel is making this announcement, there must be a market that they target at to whom recognition is more important that the simple fact of helping another. Would these so called people be encouraged by the fact that their names would be published or even broadcast on television?

I only wonder… Is their heart in the right place?

There are 2 ways of looking at it:

Firstly, when someone is acknowledged for a donation, it might not be for the pride of the donor. It might actually be the donee's way of saying thank you. How else do you thank unknown people who help you?

Secondly, atleast for organisations and corporates, there are several reasons for making documented donations. Tax benefits, Corporate Social Responsiblity etc. Not to mention publicity.

Infact I would say, whatever makes people charitable, is good. If it means having their names published, so be it. Atleast it gets in the money!

You know we are usually very quick to point out moral flaws, but maybe we should be ready to live with them... and make the most of the situation. So if someone pays 20,000 dollars for a sofa Britney once used, and the proceeds go to charity, I say, SO BE IT.

Am all for donating the money to the needy but am just pointing out the fact that the person who does it for recognition might not be in it for the right reason. (setting corporations aside)

As a donor I would prefer to have the money reach these people and have them thank people in general than single me out. After all there may be a person who donates Rs.100 out of a salary of Rs. 500 and another who donates Rs. 500 out of a salary of Rs. 10000. Who is this more tougher on?

I agree that the world is full of moral flaws but we have so readily accepted them and forgotten the whole point behind the act.
